Both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry agree that kids should be seen by their first birthday or first tooth, whichever comes first. This recommendation is backed by evidence-based science. However, many parents are unaware of this and bring their children in for visits later. If you have missed your child’s first visit, do not worry! Schedule an appointment for your kids quickly.
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars, and any deep grooves (called pits and fissures) of teeth. More than 75% of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Teeth with these conditions are hard to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing deep grooves, creating a smooth and easy-to-clean surface.
Sealants can protect teeth from decay for many years but need to be checked for wear and chipping at regular dental visits. Sealants protect baby teeth, children's and teenagers' teeth as well as adults!
Every day your teeth lose some of their protective minerals when you consume acidic and sugary foods and drinks and fail to brush thoroughly. The enamel is damaged. One way to strengthen your teeth and reverse this damage is through remineralization fluoride treatments.
Long considered mainly for children for whom we recommend a fluoride treatment at every visit, fluoride treatments have been proven tremendously beneficial for adults as well. Fluoride treatments have been proven tremendously beneficial for adults as well. Fluoride stops the progress of newly formed cavities and adult root decay can be greatly reduced through these treatments.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screenings are singlehandedly the most important part of any dentist's job. Dentistry is primarily a preventive branch of medicine and Dr. Jyothi truly believes in the power of prevention. A dentist should give you a very thorough oral, head, and neck exam. This will include a very detailed palpation of all your intraoral and extra oral, head and neck exams, an evaluation of your TMJ, all teeth, all tissues and muscles inside your mouth and neck. Your dentist should also inform you of the findings and let you know if the oral cancer check was negative or did not find anything of concern. If there are issues, your dentist should be watching and evaluating. Any non-healing lesion or area of concern that does not heal on its own within two weeks should be referred to a specialist for future evaluation.
